Riding takes practice, focus, dexterity, balance and strength. It involves more athletic ability than most realize, which makes it great exercise! Parents know their children best, so look for ATVs that fit your kid's abilities.

Keep these points in mind as you shop for an ATV for your child:

  • Look for safety features like throttle limiters and remote shut-offs; especially for very young or beginning riders.
  • Generally speaking, engine size is an indicator of machine power and weight, so stick with engine sizes between 50cc and 110cc for smaller children, 125cc to 150cc for most kids and no more than 200cc to 300cc for bigger teens.   • Consider the seat height, wheelbase, weight and suspension of the ATV. Lower seats and lighter weights are easier for little ones to mount and control. A wide wheelbase and quality suspension help keep the quad stable and planted at speed and on rough, unlevel terrain.
  • ATVs are not shoes! Never buy a quad bigger than your child needs in the hopes he'll grow into it. That's just not safe. You may think you're saving money, but you're just trading dollars at the expense of your child's safety.
