In looking at your decision to purchase a new dirt bike, here is one of the questions that probably will come up: should I go with a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke model?
The short answer given by one dedicated biker – “The best dirt bike is the one you have the most fun riding.”
Having noted that, let’s look at some of the differences between the two engine styles.
There are four basic functions of the gasoline engine involved – intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. Without getting into a complex technical explanation, the main difference between the two dirt bike engines is that the 2-stroke model goes through the functions with two complete revolutions of the crankshaft, while the 4-stroke requires four turns. (The stroke itself refers to the upward and downward movement of the piston).
The 4-stroke engine is, of course, more complex and is more fuel-efficient and has a cleaner emission.
Of course, the question most potential customers want to know is what are the pros and cons of each type of engine.
*Less expensive to purchase.
*Lightweight – easier to handle on the trail and in transport.
*Faster acceleration and deceleration – has more “pop” on the trail.
*Simple engine design – repairs are less complicated and cheaper.
*Potential engine rebuilds are easier.
*More power with a smaller engine size.
*Riders often feel there is more versatility in handling on the trail.
*More shifting is required – may be more difficult for inexperienced riders.
*More maintenance often is required, with more wear on parts.
*Not environmentally-friendly – relatively-inefficient emission system.
*Requirement to mix oil and gas.
*Overall, not as clean operating system.
*Less shifting required, making it easier for many to ride.
*Operation is less “jumpy” – steadier power and a smoother feel.
*Generally, less repair needed.
*Better lower-end torque.
*Easier to ride, especially for inexperienced operators.
*No need for mixing gas and oil.
*Overall cleaner operation with lower emission levels.
*More expensive initial cost.
*Repairs can be more expensive.
*Heavier and more cumbersome on the trail and in transport.
*Potential engine rebuilds are more expensive.
Those are all factors to consider as you decide which dirt bike is ideal for your particular use. One experienced rider said that, in his view, a 2-stroke model works best for sprinting and shorter rides, while he prefers the 4-stroke model for longer rides on straighter and more forgiving trails.
In either case, the entire family – from small youngsters to adults -- can enjoy the great outdoor fun of riding dirt bikes.
As has been said, a family that plays together, stays together. Dirt bikes get kids and teens (and often their parents) outside and away from phones and screens. They are learning a new sport and new skills that will help them gain confidence. Practice makes perfect and they will keep growing with those skills. Additionally, dirt biking has its own social network which will enable the entire family to meet new people who are enjoying the same sport.
At FamilyGoKarts.com we have experienced technicians who will help you find just the ride dirt bike model for your particular use.
The great news is that the purchase of a good dirt bike doesn’t have to break the bank. Sure, you can spend big bucks on a Japanese brand such as Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha or Suzuki – but our affordable Chinese models offer many of the same features and often are almost identical clones of the pricier brands.
If you have been considering a particular Japanese model, you owe it to yourself to take a good look at a comparable Chinese version that will be roughly half the price.
